Best colour choices for flooring that stay on trend

Flooring can be a big investment and it can have a major impact on the aesthetics of any space. That is why choosing colours that are in style and that will continue to be is important. Whether you’re looking for a carpet or hardfloor, deciding on what colour to have in your home is a big decision and shouldn’t be taken lightly. For example, lighter colours will give the space a brighter and purer feel.

However, if you want to keep your interior cool and neutral, we would recommend that you go for timeless grey tones. If your interior is dominated by brown, this will give a very natural and rustic feel, while black stands for luxury and class. Black flooring also gives the room a dramatic edge and is full of contrast. There are endless possibilities for colour matches, but The Flooring Lab is here to help you choose timeless flooring colour options that won’t go out of style anytime soon!

Tips for choosing the best colour flooring

Lighting

The colours you choose and decorate your home with will all have a huge impact on the atmosphere in each room. This is why you should judge floor samples not just at night but in artificial light and daylight too. Each type of lighting will give you a very different impression of the colour, so we recommend making sure you judge the samples at different times of the day. Something to remember is that each room type has its own unique lighting. For example, a kitchen requires lighting all day whereas a bedroom is more likely to only be only used at night time.

Think about the entire room

Here at The Flooring Lab we do not recommend choosing flooring based on an empty room. Ensure that the colour and type of flooring will match the feel that you want to give your home and interior. Bearing in mind that each room may have an entirely different colour scheme; for example, the kitchen may need different flooring and colours to your child’s bedroom. If you have some furniture or art that you want to emphasize, why not use natural colours? This will create a neutral canvas and will allow your furniture to take center stage. Why not pair your room with some decor like a throw pillow, or a wooden cabinet? This can be a great help determining the right colour if you have a starting point and will make your overall flooring decision a lot easier.

Colour choices for flooring that stay on trend

Darker wood flooring

Hardwood flooring is an important investment which adds instant value to your home. But you must decide whether your choice is timeless or just trendy, as your personal preferences could instantly remove value from your home.

Almost all types of wood flooring undergo some kind of staining to give them the desired finish. So having the option between darker wood flooring and lighter wood flooring can have a big impact on the interior of your home. Dark stained floors are timeless and very stylish, they can offer a beautiful contrast to light walls or cabinets. Although this flooring is more challenging to keep clean, it is an option which will not go out of fashion anytime soon.

Bleached and lighter wood flooring

Not everyone would like a darker wood stained floor so for some, the more softer and white-washed look of a bleached floor is a better trend for them. This kind of flooring consists of wood that has undergone a bleaching process (blanching). This involves applying a chemical solution onto the surface of the wood to get rid of the colour - the artificial dye or stain coating of the wood. Lighter wood that has an ashy white-washed look helps to brighten up any space and has a ‘classic’ appeal as it is extremely versatile and perfectly complements any neutral decor.

Patterned flooring

Most of us are familiar with the side by side format of wood pieces that look like a brick format. But, in more recent times people have been adding a unique twist to their homes - adding patterned vinyl layouts as a stylish flooring option. At The Flooring Lab we are seeing an increase of chevron or herringbone designs in homes (which we love!). This adds a new approach to the original flooring we are used to and could even increase the value of your home! Patterned flooring trends are also including vintage patterns. These are making a comeback as more homeowners want quirky flooring styles and this perfectly blends vintage with contemporary.

Neutral carpet

The bottom line is that most neutral colour carpets work well in most spaces (apart from bathrooms and kitchens for obvious reasons!). There are a few factors you should keep in mind when choosing a general colour to take over your home. Additionally, there are a lot of good reasons why you should choose a neutral carpet; for example, it provides a complementary backdrop to all decor choices. This means you can change your wall colour or decor every year, if you really wanted to! But your floor can adjust to your new schemes, so will last a number of years. A neutral floor complements and doesn’t dominate the view so will last a long time and is a good choice for a lasting trend.
