Flooring buyer's guide

Installing new flooring is one of the more expensive home improvement projects that you can undertake, and with so many choices - wood, laminate, carpet, vinyl etc - where should you start? The Flooring Lab has put together a helpful buyer’s guide which will help you with your big decisions throughout your home. There is a lot to consider when investing in new floors so let's get into it!

A flooring checklist

Sample, sample, sample

Before you make that decision to buy, we always recommend getting samples of your top, chosen flooring choices. You should compare them in different lighting and place them side-by-side and possibly at different angles, in order to help make your final decision upon ordering your selected choice of flooring. Here at The Flooring Lab, we have a huge range of flooring available as free samples that you can view here on our sample page. See our full range of carpets, artificial grasses, laminate and vinyl flooring and choose your sample. We highly recommend you take advantage of this FREE service because colours and shades may differ from screen to screen, as well as the lighting in your room. *Only three samples per person.

Buy it all at once

Flooring manufacturers try to keep consistency in batches, but sometimes variations can occur so you should always buy all the flooring you’ll need at one time - especially if the flooring is for the same room. However, if you do order at different times and for example, the grain is slightly different in your flooring, just don’t install the boards too close together. The Flooring Lab offers free delivery over £175, so why not take advantage of this?

Made to measure

Always measure the room’s square footage in order to determine how much flooring you’ll need. You can do this by multiplying its length times by its width. We also recommend buying extra to allow for mistakes, future repairs or if you need any extra, you can cut the piece down to your desired amount. If you’re unsure how much you should order, here at The Flooring Lab we have an online calculator to help you measure out how much you need!

Test your flooring

A common mistake that is usually made is that people do not consider how much foot traffic, sunlight, along with the wear and tear your flooring will endure. For example, if you have a large family or a lot of high traffic areas in your household, you should be looking into very resilient flooring. It is important that you test your floors to see if investing in low-piled or high-piled flooring is worth it.

Get installation ready

Before fully installing flooring, ensure you know what you’re doing or have a team or person to help you install. You don't want to spend a lot of time and then make frequent mistakes by doing it wrong! Click here to find our helpful floor installation guides. Common issues that happen include buckling or having unsightly gaps between boards. Please send an email to sales@ultra-flooring.co.uk to see if we can help with fitting at The Flooring Lab.

Budgeting is your friend

Make sure if you’re doing a large area or are planning to do the whole house that you budget for everything you do (including extra flooring). If you don’t budget you could be out of pocket halfway through and have to wait for it to be finished - wouldn’t you rather have it finished all together? If you want to budget you need to work out the measurements first, order samples and then once you have chosen the flooring - work out the cost. This will save you money in the long run!
